A TCXO (temperature compensated crystal oscillator) is a crystal oscillator with a temperature compensated network that consists of at least two thermistors and a temperature variable resistors. The temperature coefficient and values of thermistors are used to provide a control voltage that compensates the change in TCXO frequency over temperature. Temperature compensation can be achieved with or without use of a varactor, however this technique is harder to accomplish because exact resistors values are needed to compensate for the frequency change over temperature. A VCXO is a voltage controlled crystal oscillator that generally operates at the fundamental frequency of its internal crystal. A VCXO has a voltage variable varactor attached in series with the crystal. By varying the control voltage, the capacitance of the varactor changes, causing the frequency to change. The VCXO crystal is a high-Q quartz device that enables the circuit to achieve low phase jitter performance over a wide operating temperature range.
